In Washington, fresh air is what you get when a new congressman moves in.
I recently made a trip to San Francisco, and my trusty camera came along for the ride. I spent a day trying to capture a piece of the area's beauty. These are a few of the pictures I found.

Golden Gate Bridge

Okay, let's get the mandatory Golden Gate Bridge picture out of the way right now. I guess a lot of people want a picture like this one, because it's hell parking in the observation area.

Santa Cruz Coastline

The only thing the Pacific coast has in common with the Atlantic coast is that they're both really wet. The shoreline is totally different.

Coastline Beauty

The coastline along Highway One, near Santa Cruz, can be a place of tremendous beauty...

Coastline Force

...or deadly force, as these rocks jutting from the beach will attest.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse

Fortunately, they still use lighthouses. This is Pigeon Point Lighthouse, a straight shot north of Santa Cruz and yes, there are tours.

Above the Cove

We found this great little cove along the coastline. It was so pristine and undisturbed that I don't think I shall disclose its location.

Inside the Cove

It's even better to be inside the cove, with the ocean coming at you from one directon and solid rock everywhere else.

Tide of the Cove

Look out across the ocean and suddenly it hits you -- you're below the waves! The tide was coming in fast.

Cove Silhouette

There's just no words for this picture. California's coast is a spectacularly beautiful place.

Cove Arch

This is the same arch but during calmer waters. It's amazing that landscapes like this haven't been fenced in by someone to charge admission. Let's hope they never do.

Odd Trees

Keep going north for a while and eventually you'll reach Muir Woods, a redwood forest. These funny-looking trees aren't redwoods, but no one could tell me what they are.

Stand of Redwoods

These are redwoods. Well, part of redwoods. A little, tiny bit of redwoods.

Tall Redwoods

How tall are they? Really, really, tall. Way tall. Taller than even this picture suggests.

Big Redwoods

How big are they? Really, really big. That's JD down there. No trick photography. They really are that big. I could have gone to a car show, but I chose to see the coastline and the redwoods instead. Am I ever glad I did! There's nothing like this anywhere else.

Three-Blade Windmills

In the hills east of Livermore, San Francisco generates some of its power with... windmills! It must be seen to be believed. Hundreds and hundreds of windmills, all nicely lined up on the hilltops.

Eggbeater Windmills

The weirdest looking ones are these eggbeater-type. Really, it all looked quite like an alien landing.

Alcatraz

This is where all the bad people used to go. Alcatraz -- great place to visit but you sure wouldn't want to live there.

Palace of Fine Arts

This is the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. It was built for a long-gone World Fair and it sure stands out. However big it looks, in reality it's bigger.
